Dark spots on the skin

How and why dark spots appear?

Melanin is a natural pigment that gives colour to the skin to protect it from the sun’s harmful rays.

Normally, melanin is distributed evenly, but accumulation in a particular area causes dark skin spots, which usually appear on sun-exposed areas of the body: face, hands, and décolletage. The appearance of dark spots depends on several factors:

  • Genetic inheritance
  • Exposure to the sun
  • Hormonal factors (pregnancy, taking contraceptive pills)
  • Age
  • Use of photo-sensitising products

Dark spots caused by exposure to the sun

Freckles are small hyper-pigmentations that appear throughout our lives on sun-exposed areas such as the face, forearms, hands and neck and are more visible in the summer.

Fair-skinned people have a greater tendency to develop them.

As freckles are a pigmentation disorder and depend on genetic characteristics they are difficult to erradicate, but they can be improved or even lightened.

To lighten dark spots, apply Bella Aurora products from their anti-dark spots treatment line.

Age-related dark spots

Senile lentigo, also known as age-related dark spots or freckles, are the result of sun damage to the skin over the years, especially on areas such as the face, forearms, hands, and neck.

They appear as a result of the combined effect of the loss of the regenerative capacity of mature skin and following continued unprotected exposure to the sun.

Bella Aurora’s solution:

Protect your skin from the sun all year round by using sunscreens.

To lighten dark spots, apply Bella Aurora products from their anti-dark spots treatment line, complemented by the exfoliating gel which will help speed up cell regeneration.

Pregnancy-related dark spots

Major hormonal changes occur during pregnancy which, when combined with exposure to sun, cause chloasma or dark spots on the skin. These dark spots appear progressively from the second month of pregnancy and during postpartum.

Pregnancy-related dark spots also due to other hormonal causes such as taking the contraceptive pill or taking hormone replacement therapy during the menopause.

These are light-coloured dark spots with an elongated appearance and are located on both sides of the midline of the face, the forehead, the cheeks, or on the chest.

Bella Aurora’s solution:

Moderate your exposure to the sun, use sunscreens throughout the pregnancy, and follow Bella Aurora’s anti-dark spot treatment, which we recommend you start after the summer.

What can I do if dark spots appears?

Reducing exposure to sun is the best antidote to the appearance of unwanted dark spots on the skin.

People with a tendency to develop dark spots should use sunscreens with a high protection factor. If you have any concerns about the appearance of your skin you should consult a dermatologist.

Dermatologists recommend using cosmetic products that specialise in the prevention and treatment of dark spots and to avoid excessive exposure to the sun.
